This is an excellent tour to give you a 'Taste of Tunisia'. After seeing the amazing ancient ruins of Carthage and the wonders of the Bardo Museum you travel inland and see the other face of Tunisia - its vibrant Islamic heritage in the city of Kairouan. Then cross the forbidding Chott El Jerid salt lake and ride a camel into the vast desert expanse. See the amazing Troglodyte lunar landscape and eat in a 'cave'. Finally, before you end this memorable journey relaxing on the gentle shore of the Mediterranean Sea, visit the amphitheatre of El Jem.

 

Itinerary

day 1 To Tunisia

Depart London on direct Tunis Air or British Airways flight to Tunis Carthage then transfer to Hotel Mercure El Mechtel for two nights.

day 2 Tunis

Full day excursion in Tunis visiting the wonderful Bardo Museum with its incomparable collection of Mosaics. Then wander ancient Carthage stopping at the Antonine Baths and the Amphitheatre. Visit the intriguing site of the Punic Ports. After lunch spend time browsing in the Medina then drive to the Blue White village of Sidi Bou Said. The streets are lined with shops selling local pottery, leather and silver goods. Sip a cooling mint tea at the top of the hill and pause to look at the superb view over the bay.

day 3 To Kairouan

Drive to Kairouan the Holiest Islamic City in Tunisia. See the Great Mosque built around 670AD by the Arab conqueror Sidi Oqba, also see the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, one of the Prophet Mohammed's companions. This is followed by a short visit to the ancient water reservoirs - the Aghlabid Basins - which is fed by a long aqueduct. Overnight stay at the Hotel La Kasbah.

day 4 To Tozeur

Drive to the old town of Tozeur then onwards to Nefta and visit the delightful 'Corbeille de Nefta'. Lunch at the hotel then in the evening visit the Museum of Tunisian traditions in the Dar Cheraïet complex. Overnight Hotel Eldorador Ksar Rouge.

day 5 To Douz via Chott El Jerid - Douz

Cross the vast salt lake of Chott El Jerid to Douz. It's an eerie, almost spooky place - mirages befuddle the senses - and waters on one side of the road can be hues of pinks on the other vibrant turquoise! Look out for 'desert roses'! Late afternoon camel ride into the vast desert. Overnight Hotel El Mouradi.

day 6 To Sfax via Matmata & Gabes

Depart for Matmata for a visit to the famous Troglodyte homes. This area, with its lunar landscape, has become famous as the setting for films such as Star Wars. Visit a Berber house and lunch in a 'cave'. Drive onto Gabes Market then to Sfax and visit the Medina. Check into the Hotel Novotel Syphax in Sfax.

day 7 To Sousse via El Jem & Monastir

Depart for El Jem and visit the wonderful atmospheric amphitheatre. You can imagine the thrill of the Gladiatorial battles, and, deep in the underground tunnels experience the anticipation and fear that must have hung in the air! Take lunch in Monastir and visit the Medina, then on to Sousse to overnight at the Hotel El Mouradi Skanes Beach.

day 8 To Hammamet

Morning visit to the Medina and Ribat in Sousse. Afternoon visit to Port El Kantaoui. Perhaps have lunch in one of the many cafes or restaurants that line the harbourside in the delightful Marina. Drive to Hammamet. Overnight Le Hammamet Hotel.

day 9 To London

Return to London on direct flight from Tunis Carthage International Airport on Tunis Air or British Airways.

 

Or extend your stay with a few days on the golden shores of the Mediterranean Sea at the beginning or the end of your tour. Choose from Djerba, Monastir, Skanes, Mahdia, Sousse, Port El Kantaoui, Hammamet/Yasmine.
