Itinerary

day 1 To Tunis - Hammamet

Depart London for direct flight to Tunis Carthage International Airport on Tunis Air or British Airways. Transfer to Le Hammamet Hotel for overnight stay.

day 2 To Matmata via El Jem

Drive to El Jem to see the imposing Roman amphitheatre built to show the wealth and influence of the area. Continue to Sfax to visit the Medina - perhaps the finest in Tunisia. After lunch drive to Matmata, with its intriguing Troglodyte homes and famed for scenes shot in the Star Wars films. Overnight stay in simple Troglodyte hotel - Ksar Amasir.

day 3 To Tataouine via Medenine and Chenini

Drive to Medenine to see the amazing 'Ghorfas' the remains of the once vast Ksour (stronghold). The local semi-nomadic tribes kept their possessions in these unique barrel vaulted rooms whilst out on their wanderings. Check into the Hotel Sangho Privilage in Tataouine and after lunch visit Chenini with its partially ruined Ghorfas clinging precariously to the steep hillside. Also visit the Berber village of Ksar Haddada with its architectural style inspired by the Ghorfas. Return to the hotel.

day 4 To Douz via Nouaïl - Sabria - Zaafrane

Depart to Douz 'The Gateway to the Sahara'. Check in at Hotel El Mouradi. After lunch visit the villages oases of Nouail, Sabria and Zaafrane. Late afternoon take a camel ride into the desert - shades of Lawrence of Arabia!

day 5 To Tozeur via Chott El Jerid

Cross the vast salt lake, Chott El Jerid to Tozeur. The salt flats, shimmering in the heat of the day, create mirages - stately galleons and camel trains appear simultaneously! Lunch in Tozeur with remainder of day at leisure. Three nights Eldorador Ksar Rouge.

day 6 Excursion to Nefta

After a relaxing morning leave for Nefta and its famous Palmeraie. Nefta is a stronghold for Sufisim. See the numerous marabouts - tombs of Holy Men. In the evening visit the museum of Dar Cheraiet in Tozeur.

day 7 Excursion to Chebika, Tamerza and Mides

Depart to the mountain Oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides with their scarred canyons and ravines sculpted by the ravages of torrential rains. Time stands still when walking through the ancient streets of these 'ghost' villages. Return to the hotel for lunch. Remainder of the day at leisure.

day 8 To Hammamet via Gafsa and Kairouan

Depart via Gafsa to Kairouan to visit to the Islamic Monuments in the Holiest town in North Africa - the Great Mosque built in 670 AD. by Sidi Oqba and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi one of the Prophet Mohamed's companions. Visit the Aghlabid Basin - a complex irrigation system. Stop at a carpet shop to see famous woven and knotted carpets of the region. After lunch drive to Hammamet. Overnight Hotel Le Hammamet.

day 9 To London

Transfer to Tunis Carthage International Airport for return direct flight to London on Tunis Air or British Airways.
