8 DAYS 7 NIGHTS FULLY ESCORTED TOUR ON A FULLBOARD BASIS

We have pleasure in presenting our new 7 nights tour visiting a selection of the best tourist attractions, the most ancient archaeological sites, the most beautiful examples of islamic art and the most fascinating scenery and traditional villages which constitute all the richness that is Tunisia.

A selection of 3 and 4 star hotels are used on the tour depending on availability for the particular dates of travel. The actual hotels to be used are confirmed at the time of booking.

Itinerary

Day 1

Outbound flight from UK with transfer from arrival airport to hotel for dinner and accommodation.

day 2

After breakfast depart from hotel to visit the 9th century mosque in Sousse, continue to Monastir and visit the Ribat (the Islamic military and religious monument) before continuing on to El Jem to visit the Roman amphitheatre which is the most imposing of the Roman monuments in Africa.

Lunch at El Jem.

After lunch depart for Gabes to visit the market (Jara) with an optional horse and carriage ride through the Chenini oasis before arrival at hotel for dinner and accommodation.

day 3

After breakfast depart for Medenine and visit the Ghorfas (ancient Berber granaries) before continuing on to Tataouine with visits to Berber villages where ochre-coloured houses are built into the hillsides offering refuge to the local tribes.

Lunch at Tataouine.

After lunch depart for the Berber village of Ksar Haddada with its architectural style inspired by the Ghorfas. Travel on to Matmata for a visit to the troglodyte homes. This area, with its lunar landscape, has become famous as the setting for such films as Star Wars. Continue towards Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, with its large sand dunes with the option of a camel ride in the area of Zaafrane before arrival at the hotel for dinner and accommodation.

day 4

After breakfast depart hotel to cross the vast salt lake of Chott El Jerid where you will see mirages and be able to buy mineral samples. Travel on to Tozeur to visit the old town before checking into your hotel for lunch.

Afternoon at leisure or optional excursion to the mountain oases of Chebika, Tameghza and Mides where you can admire the canyons and ravines sculpted by the rare torrential rains. After dinner visit the museum of Tunisian traditions in the Dar Cherait complex before returning to the hotel for your accommodation.

day 5

After breakfast depart for Metlaoui for an exceptional excursion on the Red Lizard train which once belonged to the Bey (King) of Tunisia. From the train you will be able to admire the magnificent mountainous desert scenery.

Lunch near Gafsa.

After lunch depart for Sbeitla for a visit to the remains of the Roman town of Sufeitula with its majestic arc de triomphe erected to the glory of the Emperor diocletien. Continue on to Kairouan for dinner and accommodation.

day 6

After breakfast visit the Arabic-Islamic monuments in this the holiest Islamic centre in North Africa including visits to the Great Mosque built in 670 A.D. by the Arab conqueror Sidi Okba and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi who was one of the prophet Mohammed's companions. Followed by a visit to the Aghlabites pools, which are ancient water reservoirs, and a local carpet shop to see the typical craftwork of the region before travelling on to Dougga for lunch.

After lunch visit the best preserved Roman ruins in Tunisia which are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travel on to the capital Tunis for dinner and accommodation.

day 7

After breakfast a guided tour of the old walled city of Tunis and the Medina with its maze of ancient narrow alleyways housing hundreds of varied and colourful shops. Visit the Bardo Museum, home of the world's finest collection of Roman mosaics, as well as many works of art from the different periods that mark Tunisia's history.

Lunch at the hotel.

After lunch visit the ruins of the first South Mediterranean capital Carthage to see the Antonin Baths and the Museum followed by a visit to the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said which is built on the hillside overlooking the Bay of Tunis. The houses are blue and white Andalusian architecture and the streets have souvenir shops and small art galleries.

Farewell dinner and accommodation.

day 8

Breakfast at hotel.

Transfer to airport for return flight to UK.

Transport during the tour will depend on the number of passengers and will be in air-conditioned vehicles.

The group will receive the services of English speaking professional guides.

Please note - optional excursions are paid locally.
